NAIRA CRASHES FURTHER AGAINST DOLLAR FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 2017

The Nigerian Naira on Thursday, January 5, weakened against the American Dollar at the parallel market for the first time in 2017.

According to reports, the Naira lost three points to the dollar as it closed at N493 to a dollar, against N490 it traded on Wednesday, January 4.

Also, the Pound Sterling and the Euro exchanged for N595 and N506, respectively.

At the Bureau De Change (BDC) window, the Naira traded at N399 to a dollar, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) controlled rate, while Pound Sterling and the Euro closed at N598 and N510 respectively.

The Naira, however, remained stable at the interbank window as it exchanged for N305.00 to a dollar.

However, traders at the market said that liquidity challenge was far from being resolved, NAN reports.

On his part, Aminu Gwadabe, the president, Association of Bureau De Change Operators of Nigeria (ABCON), while decrying the spike in the exchange rate, commended the CBN for keeping it below N500 to a dollar.

Gwadabe said the task of keeping the dollar below N500 and controlling the inflation rate was enormous.

He added that the apex bank was doing its best.

But according to currency traders, the Naira is set to witness another round of decline against the dollar in the coming days ahead.

This is because the expected increase in dollar flows from Nigerians living abroad coming home for holidays fell short of expectations.

“We see the naira depreciating against the dollar by the time more businesses resume operations next week after the festive season as dollar liquidity remains thin in the market,” one currency dealer said.

DONE DEAL

Chelsea's John Obi Mikel has signed for Chinese Super League side, Tianjin TEDA.

Mikel, 29, has been offered a package worth around £140,000 per week to become the latest player to swap Europe for the riches of Asia’s emerging football market.

RIYAD MAHREZ WINS GLO/CAF PLAYER OF 2016

Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez has won the 2016 Glo/ CAF Player of the Year award– preventing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from scooping the gong for a second time.

It was the first time the Algeria international was nominated, and turned the tables against the Gabonese at Thursday’s CAF gala in the Nigeria capital of Abuja thanks to a sparkling run of form for his English Premier League side.

Aside scoring 17 goals, Mahrez also contributed 11 assists for the Foxes, are in danger of getting relegated to the English Championship.

The 25-year-old, thus, becomes thefirst Algeria to win the prize since legendary Rabah Madjer in 1987.

The recipient of the award is decided by national team coaches and technical directors in Africa – with Yaya and Samuel Eto’o the most-honoured individuals with four titles each.

IWOBI, IHEANACHO, SUPER FALCONS WIN AT 2016 CAF AWARDS

Nigeria’s trio of Alex Iwobi, Kelechi Iheanacho and Super Falcons, all emerged winners at the 2016 GLO/CAF Awards, which held in Abuja on Thursday night.

Iwobi, who broke into the Arsenal first team last year, clinched the Youth Player Award.

Iheanacho has also been influential for the Super Eagles, scoring several goals during their 2018 World Cup qualifiers and also for his Premier League club, Manchester City.

The Super Falcons defeated Cameroon 1-0 last month, to win the 2016 Africa Women Cup of Nations.

They were named the Women National Team of the Year.

JAMB TO STARTS SALES OF 2017 FORMS IN A FEW DAYS

We’re expecting the sale of JAMB forms for the 2017 UTME to begin in a few days. This deduction is inevitable, since any further delay could cause a serious upset in the Academic Calendar for 2017.

It should be noted that JAMB forms for previous years usually go on sale as from November. The delay in the Sale of 2017 JAMB Form is attributed to the change in JAMB leadership and determination by JAMB to limit middle men (cybercafes & business centres), and push down the cost of JAMB services, by introducing new payment methods.

According to earlier reports released by JAMB, the cost of the 2017 JAMB Registration Form are as follows;

1. JAMB Form – N5,000
2. CBT Centre Registration Fee – N700
3. JAMB Mandatory Textbook – N500 (The Last Days at Forcados High School, A. H. Mohammed)
